Insurance that is compulsory at Kanazawa University
Kanazawa University requires students to subscribe to the following insurance policies to prepare for accidents during their student life. From October 2019, students admitted to the university are required to join the Personal Accident Insurance for Students Pursuing Education and Research (Gakkensai) and Liability Insurance Coupled with Gakkensai (Futaibaiseki) insurance plans.Both insurance policies are available to students of universities and junior colleges throughout Japan, and are handled by the Japan Educational Exchanges and Services.

1. Overview of Gakkensai and Futaibaiseki
Gakkensai
In Japan and overseas, this insurance provides coverage against ① physical injuries as a result of a sudden and unexpected extraneous accidents that occur during educational and research activities and ② injuries that occur while commuting to school or in transit between school facilities. Illnesses are not covered by this insurance.
Futaibaiseki
This insurance covers damages incurred by assuming legal liability for damages due to injury to others or damage to others' property (excluding traffic accidents) during regular curricular activities, school events, extracurricular activities, or the commute to and from these activities (including internships, nursing care experience activities, teaching practice, volunteer activities, and the commute to and from these activities that the university has designated as regular curricular activities or school events) both in Japan and overseas. Enrollment is mandatory for activities such as internships and training. Please note that you cannot enroll in Futaibaiseki only.

2. Enrollment procedures
Depending on the situation, please follow the procedures below. Please note that Gakkensai and Futaibaiseki do not issue insurance policies to individual students. If you require proof of enrollment for research activities, internship participation, etc., please see "5. Certificate of Enrollment publication"?
How to enroll
(1) Payment forms are available from the Student Affairs Section of college or graduate school or from Health Service Center. Check the insurance premium for your department on the payment form and pay the premium for the number of years up to graduation or completion, including the current academic year, at your nearest post office (payment fees are to be borne by the insured person).
(2) Please be careful, because if you pay the incorrect amount, your insurance will not be valid.
(3) New students should make payment using the payment form enclosed with the admission procedure guidelines which will be sent to them after the results are announced.
(4) Please keep the "bill and receipt for transfer payment" or "statement of charges (in case of ATM payment)" issued upon payment of premiums without discarding it. It will serve as proof of payment.

Please check in "3. Confirmation of subscription status" whether you are enrolled in Gakkensai and Futaibaiseki, and if you are not enrolled, please apply for enrollment as soon as possible.
Please note that there are cases where students are found to be paying duplicate insurance premiums even though they are already enrolled. Please be sure to check your current enrollment status before enrolling.
<If you are enrolled beyond the completion period (including taking a leave of absence)>
Please complete the enrollment procedure by the month the insurance period ends (April enrollees: until the end of March; October enrollees: until the end of September?).
3.Confirmation of subscription status
You can check this on the Acanthus Portal (updated regularly).
- After logging in, click on "Academic Information Service"
- Click on "Register Information"
- Tabs will be displayed, so select "Gakkensai" from there.
* For students who have recently completed the enrollment process, it may take several days to three months for the information to appear.
4.Handbooks
(1) The form is distributed at the orientation for new students upon enrollment. It can also be obtained from the Student Affairs Section of your college or graduate school or from Health Service Center.

5.Certificate of Enrollment publication
You may be asked to submit Enrollment certificates to your internship or study abroad institution, so students who need one should apply well in advance.
Please note that we cannot provide you with just the policy number. The policy number is listed on Enrollment certificates, so if you need one, please come in to have Enrollment certificates issued.

*Depending on staff work schedules, we may not be able to respond within the allotted time.
Things to bring: Student ID card, transfer payment request form and receipt, or statement of account (only for students who have completed the enrollment procedure using the designated payment form)
- Please download the "Gakkensai and Futaibaiseki Certificate of Enrollment Application Form" and fill in the necessary information. Application forms are also available at the Health Service Center, but preparing them in advance will make the process go more smoothly.
- Please present your student ID card and submit the application form to Health Service Center. We will make a copy of your student ID card here.
- The earliest possible date for issuance is noon or later on the day following the day the application form is received (or noon or later on the day after a holiday if the following day is a Saturday, Sunday or holiday).

- Please download the "Gakkensai and Futaibaiseki Certificate of Enrollment Application Form" and fill in the necessary information.
- Please send the application form and a copy of your student ID to Health Service Center. If you have recently enrolled using the designated payment form, please also enclose a copy of your transfer payment invoice and receipt or statement.
- The earliest possible date for issuance is noon or later on the day following the day the application form is received (or noon or later on the day after a holiday if the following day is a Saturday, Sunday or holiday).
*In principle, Enrollment certificates will be handed over at the counter, but students who wish to have them mailed should enclose a stamped return envelope.
6.Changes to terms of contract
If any of the following occurs, please make sure to report and complete the necessary procedures as soon as possible.
If you are eligible for a refund of your insurance premiums, you will need to complete the procedure at Health Service Center.

Things to bring: Student ID card, something that shows your refund account info (cash card or bankbook)
*If you wish to use Japan Post Bank, please bring your bankbook.
absence from school
If you are absent from school for a total of one year (365 days) or more (*1) during the insurance period, the insurance premiums for the period of absence will be refunded if you apply to Health Service Center after returning to school at the end of the period of absence (any days less than one year will be rounded down). However, if you file an insurance claim for an accident during the period of absence, the premiums will not be refunded.
(*1) A total of one year (365 days) or more refers to a period of absence that is continuous or intermittent (for example, six months + six months) and lasts for one year (365 days) or more. However, absences that span multiple insurance periods cannot be added together.
The insurance period at the time of application will not be extended, so in order to receive future insurance coverage, you will need to complete the enrollment procedure again just before the end of the insurance period at the time of application.
Withdrawal (cancellation) *Includes expulsion, death, and early completion
Students who wish to withdraw from the university (including those due to expulsion, death, or early completion) should notify the student affairs office of their college or graduate school, and then report to Health Service Center.
A portion of the insurance premium will be refunded for the remaining academic year. If you withdraw from school in the middle of an academic year, the remaining insurance premium for that academic year will not be refunded.
Additional coverage and Change the course of Futaibaiseki
Students who need to add a special clause (Additional coverage for the prevention of contact infection or change the type of Futaibaiseki due to a change in affiliation, such as transferring or changing departments, must notify the student affairs office of the school or graduate school to which they belong. Then, follow the instructions to proceed with the procedure.
(1) When changing Futaibaiseki policy, you must cancel the remaining insurance period and enroll in a new policy.
(2) Students transferring to School of Medicine, School of Pharmacy, or School of Health Sciences, or students transferring from School of Medicine, School of Pharmacy, or School of Health Sciences to another school please check here (Japanese only).
(3) Students transferring from School of General Education (Science) to School of Medicine, School of Pharmacy, or School of Health Sciences should check herehere (Japanese only).
*This program is for students in School of General Education (science) who enrolled in or after 2024.
7. Insurance claim procedures
If an accident occurs that you believe may be covered by Gakkensai or Futaibaiseki, please follow the procedures below.
However, please report the accident within 30 days, including the day of the accident. If you do not report within 30 days, insurance payments may not be made.
Gakkensai (In the event of injury to himself/herself)
<Injuries sustained during regular school hours and while commuting to and from school>
Please report the accident to the student affairs office of your college or graduate school. Then, follow the instructions to complete the necessary procedures.
<Injuries during extracurricular activities>
For injuries sustained during extracurricular activities, the activity must be approved by Kanazawa University. Please see below for a list of extracurricular activity groups approved by Kanazawa University.

- Report the incident to the Health Service Centre.
- Please report the accident to Tokio Marine & Nichido using the Gakkensai Accident Notification System.
- After reporting the accident, please print out the screen and submit it to Health Service Center (you can also show a screenshot). After confirmation, you will be given an insurance claim form.
- Please fill out the necessary information on the insurance claim form. Also, please have Advisor sign the accident certificate section.
- Please submit the completed insurance claim form and any receipts from medical visits to Health Service Center.
- Once the university has completed the accident certification procedures, the complete set of documents will be returned to you. After that, students should send it to the Tokio Marine & Nichido School Insurance Section.
- After the claim procedure is completed, Tokio Marine & Nichido will pay the insurance money.
Futaibaiseki (In the event of an accident involving bodily injury or property damage)
- Immediately report the accident to Tokio Marine & Nichido School Insurance Corner (TEL: 0120-868-066). Provide the following details to the best of your knowledge:
?Your name, age, and university name
? Date and time of the accident
? Location of the accident
? Name and age of the victim
?Cause of the accident
? The extent of the damage (injury, damage, etc.)
- Report the accident to your college school ?student affairs section of the Graduate School or Health Service Center. You will be given an insurance claim form (the insurance company may mail it to you).
- Please submit the completed insurance claim form and evidence designated by Tokio Marine & Nichido to the Student Affairs Section of your college school/ graduate School or Health Service Center.
- Once the university has completed the accident certification procedures, the set of documents will be returned to you. After that, students should send it to the Tokio Marine & Nichido School Insurance Corner.
- Once the claim procedure is complete, Tokio Marine & Nichido will pay the insurance money.

Futaigakuso insurance covers student life 24 hours a Gakkensai, 365 days a year, including insurance that covers the actual medical expenses (self-paid portion of health insurance, etc.) for injuries and illnesses on and? ?off campus that are not covered by the Gakukensai insurance, and liability coverage in the event of an accident (with domestic settlement negotiation service).
